Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pronounce Reiki?

Reiki is pronounced “RAY-key” roughly translated from Japanese to mean “universal life-force energy”.

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in 1922. While other forms of energy healing existed in Japan centuries before this, Usui created the system that became known as Usui Reiki Ryoho. After a profound spiritual experience during a meditation retreat on Mount Kurama near Kyoto, Usui began teaching and sharing Reiki with others. He opened a healing clinic in Tokyo and trained thousands of students during his lifetime.

One of Usui’s most important students was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who further developed Reiki and opened his own clinic in Tokyo. Hayashi organized Reiki treatments and training methods, making the practice more structured and accessible. His work helped preserve and expand Reiki after Usui’s death in 1926.

Reiki was introduced to the Western world through Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman from Hawaii. In the 1930’s, Takata traveled to Japan seeking help for her health concerns and received Reiki treatments at Hayashi’s clinic. After experiencing positive results, she studied Reiki directly with Hayashi and eventually became a Reiki Master. Hayashi later traveled to Hawaii to support her work and help establish Reiki there.

Takata spent many years teaching Reiki throughout Hawaii and the United States. She simplified some of the traditional Japanese teachings to make them easier for Western students to learn. Because Reiki became less openly practiced in Japan after World War II, many believe that Takata’s efforts were largely responsible for preserving Reiki and spreading it around the world. Today, most Reiki practitioners can trace their training lineage back to Mikao Usui through Hayashi and Takata.

The practice of Reiki is a gentle, hands-on or hands hovering approach that helps balance all of your energy systems (physical, mental and energetic or spiritual). Reiki is roughly translated from Japanese to mean “spiritual universal life-force energy”. Every being has this energy flowing through them.

Life force energy is believed to exist within every part of us and all around us. It flows through the physical body, including our cells, tissues, organs, and bodily fluids, as well as through the energetic aspects of ourselves that cannot be seen. Reiki is a gentle healing practice that works with this life force energy. Through training, practitioners learn how to support and encourage the natural flow of energy during a session, helping to promote balance and well-being.

The idea that energy influences health and vitality has been explored by many traditions throughout history. Teachings found in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Yoga, and other ancient healing systems have long recognized the connection between energy, the body, and overall wellness.

In a body where the energy flows through the meridians without problem or blockages, the body typically is healthy and with little ailments. When the energy is stagnant, blocked or not passing through the energy meridians as easily – often caused by stress, negative emotions and feelings we have accepted as true (unconsciously or consciously) – this can lead to illness, pain, an increase in stress and many other issues in the emotional, physical or spiritual bodies, if not all. When left unaddressed over a long period of time, it can manifest into higher degrees of illnesses or disorders.

Reiki practitioners act as a channel to this energy, supplying it to the recipient with hands hovering over, touching the body, or even sending it over a long distance (across the room, town, country or even the world!). When the energy is received by the recipient, it goes where it is most needed.

When there is a chronic condition or problem, it can take multiple sessions to begin seeing any major improvements, although often there are also mild improvements noted during or immediately after the sessions while walking along the path of healing.

Most people feel calm, relaxed, and refreshed during and after a Reiki session. Occasionally, someone may experience a temporary healing response as their body begins to clear out stuck energy and emotions. This can sometimes cause mild symptoms such as a headache, upset stomach, fatigue, vivid dreams or mild resurgence of unprocessed feelings. If this happens, it may help to drink plenty of water, eat light and healthy foods, and get extra rest. These reactions are usually temporary and can be a sign that the body is supporting its natural healing and cleansing process.

This is why it is important to ensure your care providers are aware of you receiving Reiki – so they can be supportive in your care if any additional support through your healing journey is needed.

No, you do not need to stop any current medications or treatments, but you should always tell your care providers if you are receiving Reiki.

Reiki is recognized as an integrative therapy, meaning it works very well alongside conventional medical treatments.

No. Reiki is beneficial for all forms of illnesses and conditions, from minor problems such as bug bites, general stress or an upset stomach to more major struggles such as post-operative recovery, pregnancy and childbirth, chemotherapy side effects, chronic pain, or severe and chronic mental illness. Reiki can help with post-operative recovery time, reduce side effects of certain treatments and reduce the stress associated with a lot of conditions and their associated treatments, making it easier for your body to work with the therapies and focus on healing. There have been some cases where people have experienced complete healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments. While some have experienced these miracles, they cannot be guaranteed.

You will only be asked to remove your shoes and coat before lying down, so make sure whatever you are wearing is comfortable.

Unfortunately, insurance companies do not typically provide reimbursements for Reiki sessions.

Some HSA/FSA accounts and insurance companies are becoming more open to alternative therapies, so always check with your insurance company to see if that is an option for your plan.  You may be required to submit medical documentation supporting this, such as a letter from a licensed healthcare provider stating how Reiki is beneficial or necessary for your condition.

Absolutely! In order to be able to channel the universal life energy, you will need to receive an attunement and training from a certified Reiki Master that has received the Reiki Master course, or Shinpiden.
